Gluten free fried oreos (and gluten free fried cookie dough), with a sweet and easy to make gluten free batter for deep frying. The classic state fair treat, now safe to eat.

I vividly remember the first time I had a deep fried oreo stand!
It was sweet and greasy, covered in powdered sugar, it was like a deep fried gooey piece of heaven.
I was in love and have been dreaming of making gluten-free deep fried oreos ever since.
But I haven't, because life happens.
Well a few weeks ago I got a preview copy of April Peveteaux's new book The Gluten-Free Cheat Sheet: Go G-Free in 30 Days or Less. As I started thumbing through it one recipe stood out.

How to use gluten free flour
When baking with gluten free flour, your results will vary based on the gluten free flour you use.
Please read through my gluten free flour page for very thorough and detailed information about which gluten free flours work well, how to substitute one gluten free flour for another, and for my gluten free flour recipe.
How to measure gluten free flour
How you measure your gluten free flour is also very important.
To accurately measure your flour, use the “fork, spoon, knife” method.
First, mix your gluten free flour with a fork to ensure it is aerated and evenly mixed.
Then carefully spoon it into your measuring cup.
DO NOT scoop the flour with your measuring cup, you’ll compact extra flour into the measuring cup and then your gluten free baked goods will be dry and crumbly because they'll have too much flour.
Finally, level off your measuring cup using a knife.
Use room temperature ingredients
You’ll also have best results if all the ingredients are at room temperature, except for any ingredients that specify “cold” or “chilled”.
Using room temperature ingredients like eggs, butter, and gluten free flours helps your baked goods to bake evenly and correctly.
Think about it, if you use cold eggs, your batter will be colder.
And then it will change how it bakes, or may take longer.
For recipes that rise using steam, this is especially important.

How do you make gluten free batter for deep frying?
To make the gluten free batter, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, egg, milk, vanilla, and 2 teaspoons vegetable oil in deep bowl.
whisk it well until there are no lumps.
Allow to sit for 10 minutes. This is important, you want the gluten free flour to absorb the milk, giving the granules of flour a chance to swell and the batter to thicken so it coats your gluten free oreos.
The batter is the perfect thickness for coating the gluten-free sandwich cookies, and the second it hits the hot oil the batter puffs around the g-free oreos creating a crisp, light pillow around that chocolate cookie middle.
How do you fry oreos?
Dip your gluten free chocolate sandwich cookies into batter and fully coat them before gently dropping them into hot oil.
Cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until batter is golden brown.
Remove from oil and allow to drain on paper towel-covered plate or on a cooling rack over a cookie sheet.

Carefully dip each cookie dough ball into the gluten free batter so it is fully coated.

The cookie dough gets soft and the chocolate melts. Deep fried cookie dough is the ultimate indulgence!

How to make vegan deep fried oreos?
To make vegan deep fried oreos, you just need to use a dairy free milk to make your batter, and use egg substitue instead of the egg.
My go-to egg substitute is Bob's Red Mill's Egg Replacer.
while oreos are vegan, many gluten free chocolate sandwich cookies are not. Be sure to buy gluten free sandwich cookies that are vegan too!
What should you serve with deep fried oreos and deep fried cookie dough?
Dust your gluten free fried sandwich cookies with powdered sugar and enjoy while hot.
They are also really good with whipped cream, fudge sauce, chocolate syrup, or ice cream.
The frosting in the oreo sandwich cookie gets a bit melty and the cookie gets warm.
